Alberto Moreno closes in on Lazio transfer as Liverpool left-back visits Rome

Alberto Moreno is in Rome during the international break as the Spanish left-back seeks to tie up a pre-contract agreement with Serie A side Lazio.

The 26-year-old’s five-year spell at Anfield will come to a close when his contract expires in the summer, with the former Sevilla defender now firmly out of favour under Jurgen Klopp when it comes to team selection, although still a popular member of the squad.

Moreno has only played five times in all competitions this season, and just twice in the Premier League.

His only appearance of 2019 came in the FA Cup third round defeat to Wolves , as Andy Robertson has been a consistent presence on the left of Klopp’s defence.

Moreno impressed in the first half of last season, but his stock has now fallen so far that James Milner is expected to deputise at left-back when Robertson is suspended for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at home to Porto next month.

After signing in the summer of 2014, Moreno has played 141 times for the Reds and scored three goals, but he is often remembered for erratic displays such as in the Europa League final defeat to his former club Sevilla in 2016.

Moreno uploaded images from his trip to Rome to his Instagram Story on Wednesday, sharing photos of him with his family and with former Reds teammate Lucas Leiva, who joined Lazio in 2017.

Luis Alberto – another former Liverpool player – is also currently at Lazio, where he has impressed in his last two seasons.
